Bournemouth Gilbert & Sullivan Society- Patience

What a great evening at the theater!

This past week I was lucky enough to attend and photograph the final dress rehearsal of Patience as performed by Bournemouth Gilbert & Sullivan Society.  The performance was held at The Lighthouse Centre for the Arts in Poole.

Patience is one of the lesser known Gilbert & Sullivan Operas, and although it may not be as well know as HMS Pinafore or Pirates of Penzance, it still has quite a few wonderful moments and under Alan’s masterful direction it was a very entertaining show.

A few of the moments which stood out for me were the Duke,Colonel and Major’s trio in Act II, where the lighting and staging were quite well established and Robin, Ian and Mike’s performances really made the moment quite entertaining.   The ladies chorus performance and costumes at the beginning of the show were quite ‘ethereal’.  (In fact the costuming and wigs throughout the show were particularly pleasing.)  Their fluid movement and beautiful well-rounded sound made for a charming opening.  All of the principals gave well-developed, balanced performances throughout.  I particularly enjoyed the madrigal style duets between Rosie and Pete (Patience and Grosvenor).  As always, John’s committal to his role of the smarmy Bunthorne made the performance all that much more enjoyable.

The greatest highlight for me though, had to have been the beautiful array of mustaches on the Dragoon Guards.   Simply stunning!  Teeheehee.

Please enjoy these photos and you can see the rest either in my events folder or purchase prints for your own collection here.

Getting Into the Halloween Spirit

Carter received a package in the mail from America today.  He got a special delivery and it was just what he’s been talking about for the past few weeks.

Carter received his Halloween costume today, and it is…<drumroll please>… Ninja!  A really real modern ninja outfit.

It couldn’t have been more perfect, and it’s been a while since I’ve seen his face light up quite so brightly.  Before I knew it, he had it on and was asking for his first official photo shoot as a ninja.  Who was I to deny that request?  We grabbed a couple of flashes and my camera, then headed off into the backyard.  I can only wonder what the neighbors must have thought  when they saw bright flashes of light coming from our walled garden.  It was really fun to experiment with a second flash and, although it may not be perfect, it sure is fun.

Well, here it is.  CJ-san and his new outfit, that he refuses to take off, even to go to bed.

Everybody was kung fu fighting.....Ya!

BT Storytellers: Behind the Scenes on the Gold Carpet

Before I post the photos of all the fantastic athletes and other personalities from the Gold Carpet at the BT Olympic Ball, I thought I’d give you a few behind the scenes shots to help to set the mood of the day.  I’ve chosen photos that help to tell a bit of the story from the event.

In this first set, I’d like to introduce you to some of the people who helped to make the day so special:

Top right: Caroline and Jasmine, The ladies who were my contacts on the day.  Among other things, they were there to help to make sure that the day went smoothly for us.  They did a fab job and helped to make us feel a part of the event.

Bottom Left: Anthony, The BT events photographer who snapped away pics of Toma nd I throughout the night.  He also went through the protocol of being a red carpet photographer with me, before the chaos began.  It helped so much to have him there to give me a heads up, so that I didn’t feel so worried about the, “What happens next?”

Bottom Right: My fellow BT Storyteller, Tom Mallion (@twowheeldocs).  His documentaries are entertaining and informative.  I can’t wait to see his newest doc about the event.  Check out his most recent work, a doc about Paralympic Dressage Champion Lee Pearson, MBE.

Sometimes you have to step back and check out the bigger picture, and that’s just what I’ve done here:

Top and Bottom:  Before and After of the Photographer’s area of the Gold Carpet

Middle: Did you ever wonder how the magazines and newspapers get those event photos so quickly?  No?  Ok, it’s just me then.  Within 5 minutes of the last arrival, the Pro photographers who get to do this for a living, were already on their laptops, sending their photos off to their agencies.

So that’s a bit of behind the scenes of the event.   I think I might put together a list of Red Carpet Etiquette for Photographers.  If you’re interested, drop me a line and keep an eye on the blog in the next week or so.

Next… The portraits of the athletes and celebrities who arrived on the Gold Carpet on the night.

Sneaky Peek- BT Storytellers: A Gold Carpet Engagement

On Friday, I was lucky enough to be asked by BT Storytellers along to take photos on the gold carpet for the BT Olympics Ball, held at Kensington Olympia, London.  It was my first assignment with the Storytellers and it couldn’t have been more perfect.

Here is a peek at a photo I received from the Storytellers today.  Normally, I wouldn’t show another photog’s work on my blog, but it’s not very often that I see a photo of myself that I actually like.  I’d like to thank Anthony, the events photographer on the night for BT, for the photos and his fab editing skills.

Sneaky Peek: A Cheeky Night at the Circus- The Arrivals

I was lucky enough to have the chance to photograph one of the most entertaining nights of entertainment that the Bournemouth Pier Theater has seen this year, the Vaudeville Circus and Masquerade Ball (part of the Bournemouth Arts By The Sea Festival).

Here’s a quick peek of a few photos from the arrivals that night.  The audience was encouraged to dress in their best, and many of them rose to the occasion.  The air was full of excitement, and there was a buzz as they entered the auditorium.

Here’s just a little taster of the fun that’s yet to come:
